A Los Angeles congressman and the president of the Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL) put their money where their mouths are.
Congressman Jimmy Gomez, a member of California’s 34th District in Los Angeles and the LAPPL president, Craig Lally, wagered French Dips if the Dodgers did not win the World Series.
With the boys in blue losing to the Astros in game 7 on Wednesday, it’s time for both to pay up. Had the Dodgers won, both Gomez and Lally, and their staff would have enjoyed Texas barbecue on the dime of their opponent.
Congressman Gomez will be sending French Dips and sides to the office of congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee who represents the Houston area, and Lally will send dips to the president of the Houston Police Officers Union, Joseph Gamalbi and his staff.
Gomez’s office posted a video to social media of him and Lee on the House floor when the wager was made by Lee, just before Game 1 of the World Series.
“The Houston Astros are an amazing team but the Dodgers are better […]. If we lose I will bring some French Dip sandwiches from a Los Angeles institution, Philippe’s in Downtown Los Angeles. Let the best team win, play ball,” said Gomez.
Lally’s office said it was he who initiated the wager with Gamalbi. Lally picked Philippe’s because it is considered an L.A. icon, and area officers frequent Philippe’s for their fix of French Dips and sides.
Some wager smack talk had been taking place between the two, but it was all in good fun.
Sandwiches will be shipped directly from Philippe’s to each respective office early next week.
