Last month, Philippe’s celebrated the retirement of longtime employee and friend, Elias Barajas.
Barajas and Philippe’s management announced his official retirement, concluding Barajas’ 48 years of working at Philippe’s alongside four generations of owners.
The news of Barajas’ departure to employees and patrons in April was followed by a retirement dinner honoring their longest working employee.
Over his 48 years of employment, Barajas worked his way up from bus boy into management, and is remembered for his humorous sayings, passion for movies, and immeasurable work ethic.
“He is hard working, ethical and always took initiative,” said general manager, Julia Tauscher.
Members of the Binder family – the owners and operators of Philippe’s for four generations – remember him as a self-starter since he began his employment. Bill Binder, second-generation owner/operator from 1951 to 1985, appreciated Barajas for taking the initiative on tasks both large and small. Bill recounted Barajas changing a burnt out light bulb without having to be asked as the start of his promotion within the company.
Barajas worked almost every weekend for 40 years, and was a great leader in the kitchen. He connected personally with employees and would greet everyone with a smile.
“He is a representation of the historical greatness of our restaurant and enduring love of our French Dips,” said manager, Janette Rhodenbaugh.
Barajas is a longtime Los Angeles native and each of his seven children has worked for Philippe’s.
Barajas said he will miss the restaurant, and his second family and home of 48 years.
