PhilippesatNightPhilippe’s is being recognized for their active involvement and commitment to the restaurant industry during a dinner and ceremony on Friday, June 6 at the Hotel Casa Del Mar in Santa Monica.

“We’re very excited to be honored in this way and to have vendors, colleagues, family and friends join us for a special celebration,” said Philippe General Manager, Richard Binder.

The historical landmark restaurant, famous for its French Dip Sandwiches and homemade sides such as potato and macaroni salad, is the only independent operation to receive this award since its inception.

Philippe’s is active in the local community by sponsoring and supporting various causes, fundraisers and charities.

“They really represent L.A.; they represent tradition,” said event chair Selwyn Yosslowitz. “The establishment is unique; they’re in its own category.”

Philippe the Original was established in 1908 by Philippe Mathieu, who claimed the distinction of having created the “French Dipped Sandwich.”

In 1951, due to the 101 Freeway construction, Philippe’s moved to its current location on Alameda across from Union Station. Not much has changed since – the saw dust on the floors, cafeteria style dining and the hot mustard are still the same.

The late Elizabeth Burns headed the Bob Burns Restaurant and was the first woman president of the California Restaurant Association.

Monies raised at the Elizabeth Burns Lifetime Achievement Award Dinner help young culinary students attend and complete school, and train so they can begin their careers in the restaurant industry.
